Nice.Jo. - Jo Bidwell. Fern Bird
Comfort birds are small, hand-carved wooden birds designed to fit perfectly in the palm of your hand. Often given as tokens of support, love, or kindness, they offer solace to individuals during difficult times. Their smooth, tactile surface brings a sense of calm and peace, making them cherished symbols of comfort.
These little birds are inspired by the New Zealand fernbird. This elusive bird is more often heard than seen, known for its habit of scrambling around on the ground. In Māori culture, the fernbird, called kōtātā or mātātā, was revered as an oracle, much like a wise owl, symbolizing wisdom and insight.
Handcrafted from reclaimed Kauri wood, which once supported the roof of a home, these birds are designed to sit on the edge of a shelf as if they've come to say hello, or to be held in the palm of your hand. Each one is finished with a beeswax polish, adding a soft, natural luster to their warm, comforting presence.
